Bad hygienic conditions
Goa has come to a sorry pass with the outbreak of malaria and other vector-borne diseases, which has brought into the sharp focus the abysmal state of sanitation and filth in the State's both urban and rural areas. The steady rise in the vector-borne diseases, particularly malaria epidemic is threatening to turn Goa into & Pariah State. In fact, the State is reeling under a severe malaria menace, which has already claimed many lives and more and store cases are reported everyday. The State Government has lot to answer for even as it dithers on whether to define the outbreak as an epidemic. For its benefit the definition of epidemic is a "widespread occurrence of a disease in a community at a particular time".
Official records indicate that malaria has already claimed a number of lives and the disease has affected thousands of people in the last 8 months. In fact, hundreds of malaria cases are being reported everyday, at various Primary as well as Urban Health Centres, besides various public hospitals in the State. This is, however, nothing to say about the cases that are being reported to the private health sector.
Govt not acting
The cycle of the disease, which usually comes during the monsoons, is getting to be more predictable than the monsoon itself, but the administration has provided itself incapable of any constructive action on its part.
The government's policy of waiting till a more severe epidemic is upon the people to begin combat operation on a 'war footing is alarming to say the least.
Had basic civic duties like unblocking storm drains and disinfecting of stagnant water bodies been undertaken regularly, the damage could have definitely been minimized, if not avoided altogether.
Even now, there are no efforts on the part of the government to formulate a strategy to ensure maintenance of civic amenities, and hospitals are never equipped to handle such a situation.
