Mushtifund Saunstha was founded in 1908, by pioneers for the spread of Marathi education during Portuguese regime. Naturally the very idea was nationalistic as management and teachers had to teach through Marathi language facing all odds. Then Portuguese govt. was not helping the institution financially and so the members of management used to collect hand full of rice from every Hindu household and sell the same in market to pay teachers . People would respond to the idea of giving handful of rice rather than money. Hence the name Mushtifund as Mushti in Marathi means handful. The Saunstha used to give free education to deserving poor students even in those days. The same principle is kept in mind even by present management. Donation for admissions are not insisted upon even as on today, so that poorest of poor can take admission in our school based on merit. They are even given free books and Uniforms. Students are admitted with out any bias of caste and creed. So also teachers are appointed based on merit. Times have changed and primary education is now imparted in English also in addition to Marathi.
